Top 5 matchups for Week 2 of the 2024 college football season
1. No. 3 Texas vs. No. 10 Michigan – Saturday, Noon ET, FOX
While plenty of good matchups will be worth tuning into during Week 2, the must-watch game of the week will come during the early window on Saturday as No. 3 Texas travels to Ann Arbor to take on defending national champion Michigan in just the second-ever meeting between the two programs. The first came during an instant classic in the 2005 Rose Bowl where Vince Young helped lead the Longhorns to a thrilling 38-37 victory.
Matchup No. 2 between the Longhorns and the Wolverines could bring a similarly close result despite Texas entering the game as over a touchdown favorite. That’s perhaps due in part to a thoroughly dominant 52-0 Week 1 win over Colorado State where Quinn Ewers looked sharp and the Texas defense was tremendous. The defense performing at the same level in Ann Arbor could be key, particularly with Michigan starting an inexperienced quarterback, Davis Warren.
Warren struggled a bit in the Wolverines’ 30-10 Week 1 win over Fresno State, while star running back Donovan Edwards also failed to get things going, averaging just 2 ½ yards per carry. Kalel Mullings’ 92-yard rushing effort was a bright spot, while Michigan’s defense again looked solid, highlighted by a pick-six from Will Johnson. Saturday’s matchup will be a good measuring stick for the defending national champs who will likely need a better offensive performance to upset a Texas team vying for an impressive road win.
