Defend the ‘Boat’ seasons of change

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. — Fall is here, which means the Friday night lights are back on!

The Steamboat Sailors football team is eagerly preparing to retake the field this fall, and there’s a palpable sense of excitement in the air. This season, the Sailors are fielding a roster that runs 60 players deep, covering every class from freshmen to seniors. This depth is a testament to the hard work and dedication the players and coaching staff have put in during the offseason. Even with only six returning starters, the team is confident that the young talent stepping into starting roles, particularly from the junior and sophomore classes, will rise to the occasion.

Last season was challenging, marked by a series of unfortunate injuries that sidelined key players and disrupted the team’s rhythm. However, this year brings new hope as those injured players have returned to the lineup, stronger and more determined than ever. With their return, the Sailors’ offense is expected to be more balanced and dynamic, posing a more significant threat to opposing defenses. Tanner Cobb, Cohen Vanderbosch, and Thomas Krupp lead the charge on offense, three players who have already shown their ability to make big plays. A veteran offensive line will be supporting and opening doors for our playmakers. The unit includes five returning starters: Owen Warwick, Ethan Oates, Kyle Meyring, Kenny Orce, and Lloyd Warren. This experienced line will be essential, providing the protection and openings needed for the Sailors’ skilled players to shine and put points on the board.

On the other side of the ball, the Sailor’s defense is focused on continuous improvement. With only three returning starters from last year, the defense is relatively young but full of athleticism and potential. The coaching staff aims to harness that athleticism to contain and disrupt opposing offenses. The team’s return to the 3A Western Slope League presents a new set of challenges, as this league is known for its competitive teams and rigorous schedule. The Sailors are no strangers to the 3A Western Slope League, having previously finished with a respectable 6-4 record the last time they competed in it. This year, the team is determined to improve upon their 3-6 record from last season, and they know that it will take discipline, hard work, and teamwork to achieve that goal.

As of now, the Sailors’ schedule features nine games, but there’s hope of adding one more varsity contest due to Battle Mountain pausing its football program. The team’s conference opponents this season include Eagle Valley, Glenwood Springs, Palisade, and Rifle, all known for their tough, physical style of play. Each matchup will test the Sailors’ mettle and provide valuable experience for the younger players. A game that stands out on the non-league portion of the schedule is the clash with Moffat County, a rivalry game that always promises excitement and intensity.

The Steamboat Sailors are ready for the challenges ahead and eager to show their fans what they can do. As the leaves change color and the air turns crisp, the team is focused, united, and determined to make this a season to remember. Their determination inspires us all, and we stand ready to support them in their quest for success.
