DURANGO, Colo. — At just 16 years old, Tilia Clausen is carving her way through the competitive world of mountain biking with a determination that belies her age. A member of Durango Devo since fifth grade, Clausen has honed her skills over six years, transitioning from alpine skiing and cross-country running to focus on the adrenaline-fueled tracks of mountain biking.
“I want to achieve the highest level of bike racing I can,” Clausen shares, her eyes alight with ambition. “One day, I hope to compete in mountain bike World Cups.”
Despite her impressive academic accomplishments鈥攂oasting a stellar 4.67 GPA last semester at Durango High School鈥擟lausen’s heart beats fastest on the rugged trails where she finds freedom from life’s distractions.

“Mountain biking gives me a sense of freedom,” Clausen explains. “There’s nothing like the rush of pedaling through a challenging climb or a thrilling downhill.”
Yet, Clausen admits that her sport isn’t without its challenges. “Staying motivated on the hard days is tough,” she admits. “To manage this, I ride my favorite trails鈥攊t’s my way of reminding myself why I love this sport.”
Her dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed. “A coach once told me to be more aggressive and to fight for what I want,” Clausen recalls. “That advice has pushed me to train harder and prepare better for races.”
Beyond biking, Clausen finds joy in being social, rafting, hiking, and devouring books whenever time allows. She cherishes the camaraderie fostered within her team despite cycling being an individual pursuit.
“Being part of a team has taught me the importance of support,” Clausen reflects. “Even in an individual sport like biking, seeing my teammates cheering me on gives me that extra push.”
As she looks ahead to her junior year and beyond, Clausen remains steadfast in her pursuit of excellence both on and off the trails, embodying the spirit of a true athlete with each pedal stroke.
