Special Olympics Adams County presents Grace Myers Award for outstanding service
GETTYSBURG, Pa. — Grace Myers has volunteered over 45 years of exceptional service to the athletes of Adams County and she continues to do so. Her diligent service in many capacities has included the roles of volunteer coordinator, co-manager, county manager, certified coach in 4 sports, and fundraising coordinator. She has made an immeasurable impact on our organization, and she is truly the GOLD standard for volunteers in Special Olympics!
Grace was surprised with this award at our annual Leadership Banquet for management team members and certified coaches held at the Dobbin House. This year, some special distinguished guests were also in attendance who have worked with Grace over the years in her various positions with Special Olympics: Rich Lewis, Bonnie Newton, Jean Steinour, and Clare Walsh Miller.
Rich Lewis, who is a close friend of Grace鈥檚 and served as the Central Region Field Director before retiring from Special Olympics 10 years ago, drove the whole way from Delaware to help us recognize and surprise Grace with this award. He described her as 鈥渙ne of the most dedicated volunteers that I鈥檝e had the pleasure to work with during my tenure at Special Olympics鈥. When he thinks about Grace, the word that comes to his mind is 鈥淟OVE鈥, because Grace loves unconditionally. He went on to say that Grace loves ALL the athletes, she loves the volunteers, and at the same time that she dishes out heaps of love she is the task master to get the job done. Furthermore, Grace recognizes the importance the Special Olympics program plays in the lives of the athletes. Rich presented Grace with a hand-made quilt decorated with a heart pattern that he made for her so that she can 鈥渂ask in all the love鈥 the athletes and volunteers have for her.
Because Grace has made such a powerful impact on our program, the management team created the award in her honor. We also agreed that she was the obvious choice as its first recipient. We plan to honor other exceptional volunteers in the future with this award. The criteria for the award states that recipients must be Class A volunteers who have served for a minimum of 10 years in a variety of roles within our organization.
