Marvin Ridge鈥檚 Lanie Edwards and Kate Schindler: Making a difference on and off the court

WAXHAW, N.C. — A Q&A with Lanie Edwards and Kate Schindler who are basketball players for the Marvin Ridge Mavericks.

Name: Melanie 鈥淟anie鈥 Edwards

Grade: 10

Years in current sport:10

Team/s: Marvin Ridge High School, Team Griggs 17U National

Name: Kate Schindler

Grade: 10

Years in Sport: 7

Teams: Lady Attack Elite 16u National, MRHS Varsity Basketball

What do you love about your sport?

Lanie Edwards: I enjoy working hard and seeing the results of my efforts. I like that when I play basketball nothing else matters. It is an escape from the world.

Kate Schindler: I love working with other girls to achieve a common goal. This year we went deeper in state playoffs than in school history. We will work harder so next year is even better.

What was the best advice you were ever given?

Edwards: Hard work beats talent.

Schindler: From Coach Holz 鈥淨uitting is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.鈥 This taught me that I need to work even harder when facing adversity.

What has being a member of a team taught you?

Edwards: I鈥檝e learned how to use my voice as a leader on the court. As a point guard, you must be able communicate with your teammates. When you play with someone for a long time, you get to know how they play and each of you know where to be on the court. Kate and I have played together for 4 years so we know how to work together on the court.

Schindler: Being a team member has taught me how to recognize the strengths and weaknesses of myself and my teammates so we can come together to achieve our greatest potential.

What are your career goals and how does playing sports help prepare you?

Edwards: I鈥檓 interested in going into the medical field. Sports have taught me how to work hard and have discipline even when things do not come easily.

Schindler: To go to medical school to become a pediatrician. I love helping people and being with kids. My dad, a cardiologist, inspired me to go into this field. Playing a sport while maintaining a rigorous academic schedule has taught me about time management.

What volunteer work are you most engaged in?

Edwards: I volunteer in the SPRED organization at St Matthew鈥檚 Catholic Church. I serve as a youth group leader for special needs individuals in middle school, high school, and older.

Schindler: I volunteer through Student Council at MRHS. As class Vice President, I lead and attend many volunteering positions. I also teach younger girls, including my sisters and their teams, basketball concepts.

How does your friendship support you on and off the court?

Edwards: By sharing the same goals, we can relate to, and lean on, each other for advice and understanding. We appreciate how the other person feels because we are on a similar path. Our support strengthens our friendship which makes us better teammates on the court.

Schindler: My friendships have helped me during my personal challenges, and in times of success. Lanie is an amazing friend, and I鈥檓 blessed to have a friend who shares my success and picks me up during my struggles.
