“Quinn is everything you look for in an athlete. He’s a competitor who leads by example, is kind to his teammates, is an absolute beast in the classroom, works hard without ever complaining, obliterates his competition, and has a way of keeping everything stress-free and fun. To put it simply – he is Box Elder. I don’t think Quinn knows what kind of impact he has on those around him. He is a natural leader who always puts others first. As a coach, I couldn’t ask for a better example.”
— Coach Jerry Hodgkinson
Do you have a saying or motto that you like to live by?
John Quinn Rupper: One time my coach Jerry was talking to me before the race. He said “just go out there and get it.” I knew then that all I had to do was swim, give it my all, and everything else would be okay.
What has being a member of a team taught you?
Rupper: Swimming is very individual so the only person I can blame is myself. Luckily, my team is by me to pick up my slack. At a recent meet, our team was losing in points. I swam in the final relay, and my race was our last chance to win. I left the block and swam very slowly. But my relay team pursued and eventually my teammates beat the opposing team. I had failed my team, but they didn’t give up and together we made it through.
What is the best piece of advice you received from a coach or mentor?
Rupper: My coaches have had a profound impact on my life, they have led me to grow as a person. They are great leaders that love our team. Throughout the years, they have been dependable. They are great teachers, and I would like to thank them for all they do.
