Middletown HS baseball kicks off 2024 season
MIDDLETOWN, Md. — As spring comes to Middletown, so do our spring sports. The fields are now ready and raked for Middletown baseball. We hear from the team how the beginning of the season is going, their plans for success, and their joyful memories made playing for Middletown High School.
Brett Lucas, MHS first baseman, said, 鈥淚t鈥檚 early into the season, so we鈥檙e still making adjustments and coming together as a team. I think we鈥檒l be able to get some momentum and get our season in the direction we hope for it to go.鈥�
All the boys are in agreement to work hard to get all the way to the state championship this year. Here, we get an inside look at what a normal practice looks like for them.
鈥淲e typically talk about our last and/or upcoming game, then break off into position groups to work on defensive drills, do conditioning, and hit by going through stations,鈥� said Preston Yost, MHS pitcher. 鈥淥ur shorter practices end with some kind of short group drill or competition.鈥�
The team has been not only practicing their skills, but strengthening their bonds together and making lifelong friendships.
Andrew Raymond, MHS catcher, said, 鈥淚 enjoy playing baseball with friends I鈥檝e had for my whole life, and playing for the community I grew up in.鈥�
鈥淲hat I enjoy most about Middletown baseball is that everyday you are learning something new and getting one step closer to life with the brothers around you,鈥� said Hunter Barnes, MHS 3rd baseman.
鈥淚 love playing with my friends who I鈥檝e grown up with, as well as making new friendships that I wouldn鈥檛 have made without baseball,鈥� said Joey Nicholson, MHS right fielder.
Many of the boys have found their love of baseball at MHS and will continue to play throughout college. Andrew Raymond is playing for George Mason University, Division One baseball. Both Brett Lucas and Hunter Barnes will play at Frederick Community College, Division Two baseball. Joey Nicholson will play at Gaston College, Division Two baseball. Preston Yost will be playing at McDaniel College, Division Three baseball.
