Chino Hills鈥 Kayla Kostyk: Softball鈥檚 spirited phenom

CHINO HILLS, Calif. — In the world of softball, where every swing, catch, and play showcases dedication and skill, Kayla Kostyk shines brightly as a beacon of talent and leadership. At just 17 years old, this senior at Chino Hills High School has not only left an indelible mark on the softball field but also serves as an inspiration to her peers both on and off the diamond.

Hailing from Chino Hills alongside her older brother Garrett, and her parents, Eileen and Stephen, Kayla’s journey in softball started at an early age, fostered by a family deeply rooted in the sport’s tradition.

Her initiation into the sport was influenced by her brother’s involvement in baseball from a young age. “My brother played baseball since he was 5, so I practically grew up on the dirt cheering him on.” With a lineage boasting softball luminaries like her Aunt Kim, a hall-of-fame softball player, and head coach at Long Beach State, Kayla’s destiny in the sport seemed predetermined. ” I grew up with softball and baseball surrounding my life, ” she recalls, reminiscing on the familial ties that ignited her passion, including her grandmother and mom, both avid players. “I knew early on that I wanted to excel in softball, with the ultimate goal of playing at the Division 1 college level.”

With that goal set, Kayla understood that achieving this demanded unwavering dedication and perseverance. ” I make sure that I put in the extra work besides my scheduled practices. My dad, brother, and uncle built batting cages in my backyard, so I hit daily to keep up my mechanics and skills. I have travel ball on the weekends and I take batting and fielding lessons every week.”

Known affectionately as “Kay” among teammates and fans alike, Kayla’s versatility shines through her roles at 1st base and 3rd base. Not only does she display exceptional glove work, but she also embraces the mantle of leadership. “I serve as the leader and captain of my travel team,” she explains. “I strive to lead by example, being a supportive teammate so they can perform at their best.” This commitment to fostering camaraderie and excellence underscores Kayla’s dedication to the sport’s ethos of teamwork and collective triumph.

Kayla’s influence extends beyond the softball diamond. As the Commissioner of Pep at Chino Hills High School, she orchestrates rallies, spirit days, and football games, infusing the campus with her contagious enthusiasm. “At football games, I’m the one hyping up the crowd and cheering on the team,” she proudly declares. Her dedication to nurturing school spirit has earned her the distinction of possessing the most school spirit in the senior class.

“You only live once,” Kayla reflects, “You only have one life, so you might as well enjoy it.”

As a pivotal member of both the Chino Hills Lady Huskies and the West Coast Lady Dukes travel team, it’s Kayla’s blend of skill and leadership that sets her apart, rendering her indispensable to her team’s success.

What fuels Kayla’s passion for softball? “I love that I can be myself on the field and I love to compete,” she enthuses. “I love the aggression of being up to bat. The feeling of hitting a home run or a good hit is not comparable to anything else.” Her infectious passion for the sport permeates every aspect of her involvement, from spirited practices to intense game days, where she thrives on the adrenaline of competition.

She also counts herself fortunate to have a sports hero within her family. 鈥淢y Aunt Kim holds many records at Long Beach State. She has the most stolen bases and a career fielding percentage of .987. She is an All-American and was inducted into the Long Beach Hall of Fame. She loves the game and is always a positive influence on everyone she meets. I aspire to be an outstanding role model, as both an athlete and mom, just like her one day.鈥

Outside the thrill of victory, it’s the bonds forged with her teammates that truly enrich Kayla’s experience. “I’ve formed lifelong friendships through this sport,” she reveals, emphasizing the profound impact softball has had on her life beyond competition.

鈥淢y friends Taylor, Lyla, and Kyler motivate me; we practice together on off days at the field. I also make it a point to pray with a teammate before each game to keep us safe and focused. Just like my mom, Lyla reminds me before our games that God has a plan.鈥

With a string of accolades under her belt, including Offensive Player of the Year, Most Valuable Player, and the title of Most Inspirational Player, Kayla’s aspirations transcend personal glory. “I strive to maintain a batting average above .400,” she shares, underscoring her steadfast commitment to excellence. Her favorite softball memory was winning the baseline league and getting player of the game for hitting a grand slam when the game was tied.

Looking ahead, Kayla’s dreams encompass the prospect of playing professionally, fueled by an unwavering pursuit of her passion. Yet, amidst the highs and lows of her athletic journey, Kayla confronts her challenges with resilience and grace. “My biggest challenge is overcoming self-doubt because I always strive for excellence,” she admits candidly. “To address this challenge, I focus on being a supportive teammate, uplifting them and prioritizing the team’s success over my own achievement.”

In the eyes of her coach, Jeff Blanco, Kayla epitomizes coachability and dedication. “Kayla is one of the most coachable athletes I’ve had the privilege to coach,” he proudly asserts. From her tireless work ethic to her unwavering support for her teammates, Kayla’s impact transcends the softball diamond, leaving an indelible mark on all who witness her journey.

Kayla has decided to take her softball prowess to the shores of Hawaii this fall, accepting a spot on the team at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. “My ultimate goal is to become a key player there.” Her aspirations extend beyond individual success to a steadfast commitment to honing her skills and contributing to her team’s triumphs. It’s this selfless approach, coupled with her unyielding determination, that solidifies Kayla’s status as a true champion both on and off the field.

As Kayla embarks on the next chapter of her family鈥檚 softball odyssey in Hawaii, her own legacy reverberates throughout the Chino Hills community and beyond. With every swing of the bat and every play on the field, she epitomizes sportsmanship, resilience, and unwavering determination. For Kayla Kostyk, softball isn’t merely a game鈥攊t’s a way of life, characterized by boundless passion, unyielding spirit, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

Aloha and best of luck, Kayla! Your Chino Hills ohana will be cheering you on every step of the way!
