Buena girls basketball: Resilience beyond the scoreboard

SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. — Despite losses, Buena girls basketball keeps fighting.

The Buena High School girls basketball team has faced adversity this season, but the players and coaches refuse to hang their heads.

The Colts have struggled to a 7-15 record this season. The team lost several key players in the final game and had to rely on young and inexperienced player.

“It’s been a learning process all year,” said Bowman. ” We’re focusing on improving every day an building for the future.”

The Colts have been competitive in most games but have struggled to close out wins.

“we’ve been right there with some very good teams,” Bowman said. “Once we learn how to finish games, I think you’ll see us turn the corner.”

Despite the team’s record, the players remain upbeat and supportive of each other. team leaders like senior pint guard Emma Martin and Grace Hohman have made sure the team sticks together.

London Richardson led the team in scoring with newcomer Icsiss Perez closely behind. Grace Hohman broke the Buena Girls school record in steals with a total of 13.

The team appears to not dwell on losses too long. Coach Leah Haymore continues to remind the team that they are building character and resilience that will help them later in life.

Coach Leah Haymore is in her 3rd season as Buena’s head coach. She knows there will be highs and lows over the years but focuses on effort and development.

“I’m here to teach life lessons as well as basketball,” Haymore said. “This group has stayed positive, and that says a lot about their character.”

“We are going to keep grinding and playing hard,” Haymore said. “I know our best basketball is still ahead of us.”
