Blacksburg鈥檚 Kailyn Brawley: A leader on the court, on the field and in the classroom
BLACKSBURG, Va. — Kailyn Brawley, a standout athlete and leader on and off the court, shows her love for the game through dedication, resilience, and teamwork. From the age of four, Kailyn’s love of basketball was nurtured by a childhood surrounded by the sport’s energy and excitement. With a hoop in the driveway and a nerf hoop in her house, she tirelessly shot baskets, often challenging her older boy cousins or engaging in one-on-one battles with her father.
Throughout her journey, Kailyn has been fortunate to have the guidance and support of exceptional coaches and teammates, whose influence has played an important role in shaping her love for the game. Her coaches are Joe Reid and Carley Lytton. Captains with Kailyn, Katey Mathena, Lorelei Spradlin, Riley Price, and Brynn Ferguson have made it an unforgettable final year.
In addition to basketball, Kailyn has excelled on the soccer field, as a key player on the varsity teams for both sports throughout her high school career. For Kailyn, being part of a team is about creating bonds and building relationships that turn teammates into friends.
When it comes to basketball, Kailyn draws inspiration from iconic figures such as Michael Jordan, Caitlin Clark, and Georgia Amoore, whose talent, passion, and dedication to the game serve as a source of motivation and admiration. And when she’s not on the court herself, Kailyn can be found in Cassell Coliseum, cheering on her favorite team, Virginia Tech Women’s Basketball.
Basketball has been instrumental in Kailyn’s personal growth, teaching her essential qualities of leadership, consistency, and teamwork. She understands the importance of leading by example, putting in the hard work during practice, and lifting her teammates up both on and off the court. Kailyn’s motivation? It鈥檚 simple-she wants to win. Her determination is fueled by her desire to push herself to new heights. To athletes coming up, Kailyn offers sage advice: believe in yourself, put in the work, and block out negativity. Success, she believes, can be achieved by those willing to put in the effort.
Beyond athletics, Kailyn enjoys spending time with her family, watching movies, and hanging out with friends. With a close-knit family and a circle of supportive loved ones, she finds comfort with them, cherishing the moments together.
Already accepted into Virginia Tech for Criminology and Radford University for Criminal Justice, her direction of a four year degree hasn鈥檛 been decided quite yet. But her future is certainly bright. Kailyn recognizes that being an athlete is about more than just wins and losses. It’s about the experiences, life lessons, memories, and friendships forged along the way鈥攇ifts that she will always cherish and be thankful for.
