ANAHEIM, Calif. — Madilyn Lam, a 16-year-old sophomore at Esperanza High School, is an athlete who embodies versatility and determination. With a passion for multiple sports and a relentless work ethic, Madilyn’s journey shows her commitment to excellence and a drive to excel both on and off the field.
Madilyn’s athletic journey spans various sports, from basketball to swimming and soccer, but it’s her love for flag football that has taken center stage in recent years. Her experience in recreational Matt Leinert flag football leagues during middle school laid a foundation for her first season in high school. Madilyn, the quarterback, led her team to an undefeated 25-0 season, making the Aztecs rank 2nd in the nation. Her success earned her an invitation to the 2028 Olympics Trials for Rugby, along with friend and teammate, Bailey Frazier. This both surprised and excited Madilyn and her family, knowing what an incredible honor it is. The two athletes got to experience a rigorous rugby training program in San Diego and meet former Olympians.
Winning league championships in basketball, CIF participation in swimming, and an undefeated season in flag football highlight Madilyn’s impressive athletic career. Basketball’s intensity and physicality draw Madilyn in, while her role as a quarterback in flag football offers her a thrilling sense of control over the offense. Swimming, being an individual sport, allows her to relish the adrenaline rush before a race, focusing solely on giving her best performance. Playing in various teams has taught Madilyn the value of camaraderie and lifting teammates up. The unity and support among team members are crucial elements that contribute to their collective success.
A pivotal piece of advice that resonates deeply with Madilyn is that “the body follows the mind.” This mentality drives her confidence and resilience, reminding her that a strong mindset can elevate her abilities to unprecedented heights. “Work today for tomorrow” is the motto she aims to live by. She believes that preparation in the present paves the way for a smoother journey toward future achievements. Madilyn works on her effort and her attitude. Her pregame ritual involves jumping around to get the jitters out and then taking a knee for a quick prayer.
Madilyn’s aspirations extend beyond the playing field; she aims for a scholarship that will allow her to pursue both her athletic and academic ambitions in college, preferably one in California so she can stay close to her parents. Her primary challenge lies in maintaining discipline amidst a demanding schedule, juggling schoolwork and sports commitments. 鈥淚 just want to rest, and do nothing, but I know that if I want to perform to my best ability and improve, I have to keep grinding out the tough practices,鈥� says Madilyn. She envisions a future where flag football gains more recognition and opportunities for college-level competition. She aims to continue playing for the remainder of her high school years and hopes to compete at the collegiate level, and possibly the Olympics.
Madilyn credits her father, Jim Lam, who has been her coach and mentor, for instilling in her not just athletic skills, but also valuable life lessons in being a good person. Madilyn knows her parents are her number one supporters. They are a source of inspiration and guidance in both her sports career and personal growth. She also feels so lucky to have Coach Jimmy Valverde and Coach Chris Fitzgerald guide her in flag football.
Apart from sports, Madilyn enjoys spending time with her brother playing various games at the park and playing with her dog. Caring, thoughtful, and easygoing, Madilyn’s personality shines through in her interactions. Her sense of humor and laid-back nature make her a joy to be around.
