Fall 2023 Rumson-Fair Haven surf team recap
RUMSON, N.J. — As the 2023 fall season of the RFH Surf Team comes to an end, I look back at all the progress, fun, and success that we, as surfers and coaches, have had not only as a team but as individuals. Each of our coaches has greatly impacted this group of 30 surfers; without them, our team would not be the same. Coach Zullo is our head coach. He manages the team, keeps us on schedule, and plans our whole season. It would be impossible to keep our surfers, including myself, showing up every day at 3:30, even when the waves were flat, the wind howling, and the rain pouring down without him. When I asked coach Zullo about his favorite aspect of the Surf Team, he said,

鈥… the growth and development of our surfers in front of our eyes. Our underclassman got their footing, gained confidence, and really started to show their true surfing talent鈥 smiles, laughs, and good memories,鈥

He brought that same uplifting sentiment to our team each day. As for Coach Kane, who I don鈥檛 believe missed a day of practice, he brought not only energy and fun to the team that we had not seen before and also added our daily routine of stretching. This routine allowed for team building, and each time ended with 10 jumping jacks and an analysis of the waves for the day. He was always psyched to get in the water with us and catch some waves. Last but not least is Coach January, who joined the team this year and was a great addition. He brought another coaching perspective from a very accomplished surfer.

Our surfers have improved greatly throughout the season, and that showed up in the NSSA State Championship Competition on October 29th in Atlantic City, where, as one of the youngest teams competing, we had surfers advance to the finals. Our team has also improved throughout the season with the energy and fun that comes with being a part of this team.

As Junior, Will Halcrow(FH) said when I asked him about his favorite part of the season, 鈥淢y favorite part was being able to surf every day and have fun with my friends.鈥 That really embodies what this team is about: having fun. When asking Senior Julian Duque(R) that same question, he responded, 鈥淥ur meets make us able to get the whole team together and cheer each other on.鈥 This represents another important aspect of our team that Coach Kane embodies, comradery. This year our team is the biggest it has ever been, which allowed the progress, fun, and even more success to show in their brightest colors, and we look to build on that in the years to come.
