Westfield basketball player, transfer Nic Book helps the shamrocks start strong

WESTFIELD, Ind. — Playing basketball on the world stage against the highest level of competition is something that many kids can only dream of. But, when you鈥檙e born into a basketball family, that鈥檚 not only a dream, but a real possibility. So real, in fact, that Westfield High School senior Nic Book found himself there, representing New Zealand in the Under-17 World Cup, going head to head against Alex Starr from France, a projected top NBA draft pick.

鈥淚t was just a cool experience, not many people get to represent their country at a World Cup, and I have a lot of pride in my country,鈥 Book said of leading New Zealand to a 12th place finish. He finished in the top 15 in points and rebounds for the tournament, but that journey is one he鈥檚 been on since he was born.

He grew up in New Zealand where his mother played for the country鈥檚 national team. His father was a two-time National Basketball League all star and represented New Zealand in the 2004 Olympics. Nic鈥檚 siblings also play basketball. His brother Josh is currently playing at Missouri Western, and his sister Amiee played at Fresno State.

鈥淢y whole family played basketball, and they got me into it from a young age, so I鈥檝e been playing for as long as I can remember,鈥 said Book.

The senior transfer comes from Oak Hill Academy in Virginia, a school that has featured all-NBA talents such as Kevin Durant and Carmelo Anthony. Book had the opportunity to transfer to the number five school in the country, IMG Academy, but he chose Westfield.

鈥淚 had a few different options, and I decided Westfield would be the best,鈥 Book said. 鈥淚 thought it was a good city with good people, a good team, and good competition, so that鈥檚 why I鈥檓 here.鈥
