Esperanza coach leads the way in inaugural girls flag football season

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Esperanza High School’s inaugural girls’ flag football season has proven to be a resounding success. The varsity team finished their season with an astonishing undefeated record, 25-0. Coach Jimmy Valverde, at the helm as head coach, has been instrumental in the sport’s development. Heading both girls鈥 flag football teams and the girls鈥 basketball teams has been incredibly rewarding.

The team won the Century Conference League Championship, defeating El Dorado High 34-7, and then Villa Park 26-0. The team also had an unexpected game on their schedule, when Orange Lutheran, a team they previously defeated 20-0, asked for a rematch. They were invited by the Los Angeles Chargers, Oakley and CIF to participate in a tournament, and were placed in the top blue division. After winning two semi-final games, they won the championship in an exciting 28-27 overtime win against Orange Lutheran. Madilyn Lam threw a touchdown pass to Ellie Frazier. Then Lam completed a 1-point conversion to Ellie鈥檚 sister, Bailey Frazier to claim the victory. The entire team swarmed Bailey after she made the winning catch. The team all received Oakley sunglasses, bags, and shirts. Coach Valverde had the honor of receiving the championship trophy, which he gave to Principal Jeff Giles. It was a dream ending to an amazing season.

The debut season of girls’ flag football has been memorable beyond belief for Esperanza High School, and Coach Valverde is thrilled to be a part of it. “It’s been incredibly gratifying and fun,” says Coach Valverde. “I’m very proud to have earned the trust of our Principal Jeff Giles and Athletic Director Keri Walters, who appointed me as the first head coach for Esperanza Girls Flag Football.” Coach Valverde adds, 鈥淚’m fortunate to have two exceptional assistant coaches, Chris Fitzgerald and Jim Lam, who not only bring a wealth of knowledge but also coach with passion. They are not just great coaches; they are good men. This journey has been a whole lot of fun for the players and the coaching staff.鈥

Beyond the gridiron, there was plenty of groundwork to cover, from securing uniforms, footballs, and flags to organizing a grand kickoff dinner attended by over a hundred players and coaches. Athletic Director Keri Walters played a pivotal role in making sure the season took off smoothly by scheduling games, arranging referees, and overseeing the game clock. The collaboration of the ASB and the district was instrumental in providing support and funding for the team’s exceptional Nike uniforms.

When it comes to his coaching philosophy, Coach Valverde emphasizes the importance of not just excelling in sports but also in life. “Starting a new sport comes with various challenges, including financial considerations, practice schedules, and player selections,” he explains. “Many of our athletes are multi-sport talents, and it’s crucial to allow them to shine in their primary sports. I’m fortunate to be the head coach of the girls’ basketball team, which minimizes conflicts. We’ve worked together to ensure that all our players can excel in their chosen sports.

What’s been truly remarkable is the understanding and support that all our players have shown towards each other. It’s been an amazing journey.” Coach Valverde passionately believes that sports offer valuable life lessons. “I believe all kids should play sports because it’s a fantastic way to learn essential values, not just the sport itself. We need to teach sportsmanship, character, and the significance of giving your best. Winning isn’t just about the final score; it’s about showing respect, kindness, and support for your teammates.

At the conclusion of the inaugural girls’ flag football season at Esperanza High School, Coach Valverde’s passion and commitment are evident in the positive impact on the players and the community. The Aztecs are ranked No. 2 in the nation by MaxPreps. Girls鈥 flag football has been added to the 2028 Olympic Games. Two of Esperanza鈥檚 players, Bailey Fraizer and Madilyn Lam, have been invited to participate in the Olympic trials for rugby, due to their stand-out speed, agility, and mental toughness. Coach Valverde envisions a bright future for the sport, predicting that colleges will soon introduce flag football programs and perhaps even offer scholarships.

In closing, Coach Valverde shares his wisdom. “Win or lose, it’s essential to celebrate the journey of sports. The friendships formed on the field can last a lifetime, while the outcomes of individual games are fleeting. Embrace the journey, and you’ll emerge a winner in life. Teaching kids and young athletes to try their best and to learn from their mistakes, maintain good attitudes, and show respect, kindness, and support for their teammates is what truly matters.” Congratulations to the Aztecs on an incredible inaugural season!
