Danville HS winter sports underway, plus alumni updates
DANVILLE, Ill. — December is here, and so are Winter Sports at Danville High School. Here鈥檚 a look at what happened at the start of the season.
The Viking Wrestling team opened the season with a 66-15 win over Rantoul. Ty Rangel, Josiah Williams, Tristan Poplous, Phil Shaw IV, Phoenix Parker and Kamarion Miles all had pins for Danville.
The girls basketball was not so fortunate in their season opener, losing to Paris. However, one highlight was the high school debut of Freshman Jada Bell, who led the Vikings with 14 points. Jada already has an All-Tourney selection on her resume! After losing their second game, Danville would win their next three games.
On the boys side of the basketball, Danville returns with JaVaughn Robinson, named to the Big 12 All Conference Second Team as a Sophomore last season. The team picked up their first win of the season at the Lincoln Thanksgiving Round Robin Tournament. With a roster that is smaller than most other conference teams, Danville expects to win with speed. Of note: all of Danville鈥檚 first eight games are on the road, first playing at home on December 12.
Danville high school also has boys and girls bowling teams!
Two Danville alumni have had huge seasons. Both Caleb Griffin and Julian Pearl of the Fighting Illini football team have been named All Big Ten Honorable Mention. Caleb kicked two last second field goals this season to secure victory (Toledo and Maryland) for the Illini. Look for Julian playing in the East West Shrine Bowl in February.
