A Q&A with Green Canyon tennis twins Emma and Liz Murri
LOGAN, Utah — Emma and Liz Murri have been members of the Green Canyon High School Tennis Team 9-12th grade. They both have had great success individually and with the team over the years. They both have been Region Champs as JV and Varsity members as well as State Champs.
What are your personal goals within your sport/athletic dreams?
Liz Murri: My goals with tennis are to win state within my position (1st doubles).
Emma Murri: My goals with tennis are to become a better athlete and player but also to accomplish things to be proud of myself for and to challenge myself.
What is your biggest challenge in your sport, and what do you do to manage this challenge?
Liz: I think the biggest challenge is staying mentally strong and to manage this I focus on one point at a time.
Emma: My biggest challenge is my mental game because it’s hard to not let thoughts and distractions get in my head and affect how I play. To manage this challenge I just try to relax and know that I’ve hit hundreds of tennis balls and that I can make it in.
What was the best advice you were ever given?
Liz: The best advice I’ve gotten was to focus on having fun and making memories.
Emma: The best advice I have been given is to keep in mind we don’t all have the same mindsets.
What do you love about your sport?
Liz: I love the competitive part of it, especially how it’s more of an individual sport and winning is solely dependent on me.
Emma: I love the tennis environment and the idea of getting better at tennis for you and not for a team.
Do you have a pregame ritual you follow?
Liz: Before I play I like to visualize myself playing.
Emma: Before matches I take a few minutes to imagine myself hitting my serve and my shots in.
What do you like to do outside of your sport?
Liz: I like to snowboard.
Emma: Outside of tennis I like to snowboard, hike and play ultimate frisbee.
What has being a member of a team taught you?
Liz: Being a member of a team has taught me how to support others.
Emma: Being a member of the tennis team has taught me to be considerate of others.
What is the best piece of advice you received from a coach or mentor?
Liz: I think the best advice I’ve gotten from a coach was that at the end of the day you’re playing because you love tennis so have fun while you play.
Emma: The best piece of advice I’ve received from a mentor is that tennis isn’t my life and not to beat myself down if I don’t perform my best.
Describe a mistake you made while competing and how you overcame it.
Liz: I feel like a mistake I made while competing that I’ve overcome is needing others’ validation to have confidence in my game. To overcome this I worked harder throughout the year and improved my skills.
Emma: A mistake I have made is letting my emotions affect my game. I get frustrated at the other players and their actions and I overcome this by focusing on the game.
