Middletown football players end season well
MIDDLETOWN, Md. — They started 0-3. They practiced. They trained. They bonded. Now they have won the last 5 out of 7 games. Middletown High School (MHS) football鈥檚 regular season has come to an end, as the team heads into the play-offs.
鈥淓ver since that rough start, we have been putting things together,鈥 said MHS strong safety, cornerback, and wide receiver Matthew Phillips.
鈥淚t definitely has been a tough season for a lot of us, plenty of ups and downs. But when things got tough, we never gave up, and that鈥檚 what I think is really special about my teammates and me,鈥 said Ryan Bremer, MHS guard and defensive tackle. 鈥淚 just feel like no matter the circumstances, you can never count us out.鈥
The boys played and worked harder than ever this year, both physically and mentally.
鈥淒aily practice is offensive work for an hour, defensive work for an hour, then special teams for 30 minutes,鈥 said Chase Main, MHS defensive end and tight end.
鈥淚t was a lot of mental training, making sure you know what to do on every play, fixing small errors you make in games, making sure to focus on the little things to get better,鈥 said Bremer.
The hard practice led to not only team accomplishments, but individual ones, as well.
Phillips said,鈥 I am a top three tackler on our team; I have also only allowed 3 catches, 0 touchdowns on defense, and I have 8 pass breakups.鈥
鈥淚 broke the school record for longest kick return touchdown,鈥 Main said.
Despite the many accomplishments this season, what matters most to the boys are the bonds and memories made playing for MHS.
鈥淪ome of my best friends are the ones I鈥檝e played football with growing up. The community is unlike anything else I鈥檝e ever experienced; it feels like a family,鈥 said MHS defensive end and tight end Ryan Cline.
鈥淢iddletown football is like nothing else. The bonds, mentality, and grit you develop are special,鈥 said Phillips.
鈥淎s the season comes to a close, I would like to thank my coaches and my teammates for such a great experience playing football. There isn鈥檛 anybody else I would have rather played with or for,鈥 Bremer said.
