Ranking the teams most likely to win a Big 12 championship
Still a slim chance
Kansas Jayhawks
Kansas deserves mention here at the very least after beating Oklahoma for the first time since 1997 on Saturday. Lance Leipold’s guys are playing well right now and have again cracked the top 25 in the AP poll. However, a blowout loss earlier this year to Texas combined with a one-score loss a couple of weeks ago to Oklahoma State has the Jayhawks at 3-2 in the conference behind five 4-1 teams. Kansas has a relatively soft remaining schedule despite still having to face Iowa State and Kansas State, but will need a lot to happen ahead of them to have any chance at a title.
West Virginia Mountaineers
Like Kansas, West Virginia sits at 3-2 in the Big 12 currently, and while the Mountaineers do still have a chance at reaching the championship game in December in Arlington, Texas, it would seem to be a longshot. The Mountaineers have suffered tough losses to Houston and Oklahoma State, as well as a blowout loss in the non-conference portion of the schedule to Penn State. The offense has proven capable, especially in recent weeks, but West Virginia would need to win a road contest at Oklahoma in a couple of weeks to remain at two losses and have any chance at making a title run.
