Dez Bryant blasts McCarthy, Dak: ‘Bad play calling, reads’

DALLAS (BVM) – The Dallas Cowboys’ embarrassing, 42-10 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night caught the attention of many. It was the Cowboys’ most lopsided defeat in a decade since they lost 49-17 to the New Orleans Saints in 2013.

Dez Bryant – Dallas’ all-time leader in receiving touchdowns (73) – took to X, formerly Twitter, on Monday morning to voice his displeasure with the beatdown that took place in primetime.

“Bad play calling and bad reads is all I see,” in reference to a montage of incompletions and interceptions thrown by Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott during Sunday night’s loss to San Francisco. “The 49ers played basic defense (Cover) 1 or (Cover) 3 in this short film.

“88 got every right to be frustrated.”

The “88” Bryant is referring to is Cowboys star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb who was seen visibly frustrated with Prescott’s three interceptions on the night. Lamb finished the game with just four catches for 49 yards, but Bryant appears to place much of the blame for that on the shoulders of Prescott and Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy.

Prescott tied for the league lead in interceptions thrown (15) last season and he’s now thrown four in just the last three games, two of which have been disappointing losses to NFC West opponents.

Meanwhile, McCarthy took over playcalling duties for Kellen Moore (now the Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator) this offseason yet the Cowboys are middle of the pack in total yards (17th, 327 per game) and passing yards (21st, 203 per game). For reference, they ranked 11th and 14th, respectively, in those same categories last season with Moore calling the plays.

Unfortunately for the Cowboys (3-2), it doesn’t get easier from here with their next three games coming on the road against the aforementioned Chargers (2-2) on Monday Night Football in a possible revenge game for Moore, at home against the Los Angeles Rams (2-3) after their bye week and back on the road against the NFC East-leading Philadelphia Eagles (5-0).

Prescott, Lamb and McCarthy will certainly have to have a much better showing than they did on Sunday night if the Cowboys want to keep pace with the Eagles. If not, Bryant will almost assuredly have more to say.
