Blacksburg football coach Zack Leonard: Changing the Bruin culture
BLACKSBURG, Va. — Zack Leonard has been the Head Coach of the Blacksburg Bruin football team for two short years. In that time he and the assistant coaches have made tremendous strides in the overall culture of the team. They have developed strong bonds and are helping the team reach their potential.
Coach Leonard grew up in Roanoke, graduating from Patrick Henry High School and then studying physical education at Ferrum College. He always aspired to be a high school football coach and is thrilled that Blacksburg became his first opportunity.
The Bruin football team鈥檚 mentality started to change this summer. On top of intense training, coaches started to understand each player’s strengths and adjusted plans and plays for a better fit. Coach Leonard says, 鈥淥ur coaching staff tries to point out a player鈥檚 progress to the whole team as often as possible. We help our guys develop the habits that will make them successful.鈥�
They also focused on building community. They revamped their sponsorship program and invested in youth football programs. The Bruins hosted multiple camps and clinics and spent time with the Blacksburg Middle School physical education department. Building community will help grow the program and provide the ability to look toward the future of Bruin football. Coach says he has been blown away by the support from parents and the community.
Leonard says that they have valuable skill players to watch at the receiver position. They will give the team chances to put points on the board. He looks forward to the development of the offensive and defensive lines throughout the season. 鈥淲e have some very athletic skill players on both sides of the ball that can make plays all over the field.鈥�
The best part of Friday night for Coach Leonard and his staff is watching the kids compete and improve. 鈥淚t鈥檚 important to remember that we are playing with and for people that are important to us. Friday nights are our chance to show progress.鈥�
The 2023 season is already looking brighter than recent ones and the Bruin Family is excited for the future of this coach and this program.
