From team meals to team spirit: The birth of Charleston’s ONE Family Touchdown Club

CHARLESTON, S.C. — I’m just a mom who stumbled into a football program and saw a need to organize JV team meals. What happened next was a true calling… I began to see the other needs of the program and quickly identified that football needed its own booster club. I also recognized that we have a unique situation in fostering relationships between Daniel Island families and the Clements Ferry corridor and Huger families.

And so ONE Family Touchdown Club was born. In addition to providing funding for team operations and expenses, our goal is to unite families and lift up children who are being raised in a world that is harder than ever to grow up in.

Football saves lives. It builds character and a sense of belonging. Coaches are mentors to many of these boys in a time where there is no such thing as too many positive male role models. Football and other sports helps to keep children out of trouble- it fulfills time that might otherwise be spent pulling them in the wrong direction.

We formed just one year ago and we are still growing and learning everyday. ONE Club supports all 3 teams: B-team, JV and Varsity! We fundraise, volunteer and support 155 children across 3 teams!

The needs are bigger than I ever imagined but our volunteers are up for the challenge! The work is year round and a lot of hours are required. It is my hope to expand upon Coach Bendig’s mission of #Family within our football program and to build a culture of service. Our success isn’t just measured in dollars but also in bringing families together and building the best support system for our children at Philip Simmons and Daniel Island schools. We hope more families will join us in service by volunteering their time. I know that supporting these students and showing them our love is one of the most important things we can offer. Football is more than a sport, more than a game- it is a culture that can bring out the best in students, coaches and families. ONE Club is here for all of it and we are off to a great start… #ONEfamily
