Rowan football outmuscles McDaniel, 49-28, to pick up first win on the season

WESTMINSTER, Md. — The Rowan football team scored 28 points in the second quarter en route to a 49-22 win over McDaniel in non-league action for the Profs’ first win on the season. Quarterback Thomas Goldsborough threw for 252 yards and three touchdowns, completing 11-of-16 attempts to lead the Profs (1-1) including a 97-yard touchdown strike to Kevin Degnan.

Rowan put together an opening drive of 75 yards that took six minutes, with Nunes Bukula IV running it in from two yards out for the first score.

McDaniel (0-2) tied the game later in the stanza before the Profs exploded with 28 consecutive points in the second. Rowan needed just two plays to score as Goldsborough connected with Isaac Jean-Baptiste for a 38-yard touchdown and then got the ball back when Cody Young intercepted a pass by McDaniel’s Eric Grinwiss. After two McDaniel’s penalties, Goldsborough tossed a 10-yard pass to Corey Gordon on a fade to the right side of the end zone for the touchdown and a 21-7 Rowan lead.

The Profs went 43 yards on the next drive, helped by a 19-yard completion to Degnan and three straight rushes by Tyshawn Bookman, who ended the drive with a three-yard touchdown.

With 4:23 left in the half, Degnan scored on a 97-yard pass play to give Rowan a commanding 35-7 lead.

McDaniel kept the Profs off the board in the third quarter and got two scores to cut the Profs’ lead to 35-22 early in the fourth.

Rowan built the lead back up again as Bukula scored on an eight-yard run with 7:21 remaining. The drive came about after the defense turned away the Green Terror on a 4th and 6 ate midfield, giving the ball back to the Profs.

Nick Cerulli capped off the win, returning an interception 47-yard for a pick six for his first career touchdown, to give Rowan a 49-22 advantage.

Bukula grinded out 53 yards on 13 carries and two scores with Bookman adding 50 yards on 16 attempts and trip to the end zone. Degnan finished with 116 yards receiving. Jean-Baptiste went for 52 yards on three receptions.

Defensively, Vincent Guarino led the squad in tackles for the second-straight week, totaling 10 stops. Eric Hill added five tackles, two for losses, and a pair of sacks.

The Profs return home on September 16 to host Ursinus in a “Saturday Night Lights” game here at Coach Richard Wackar Stadium with kickoff at 6 p.m.
