Rowan volleyball taken down by Widener and Catholic in home tri-match
GLASSBORO, N.J. — Rowan had its home opener on Saturday in a tri-match with Widener and Catholic but came out on the wrong end of each contest, falling 3-1 to the Pride and 3-1 to the Cardinals here in Esbjornson Gymnasium.
In the day’s first match with Widener (25-15, 25-21, 21-25, 25-23), Jena Kaul led all attackers with a game-high 15 kills. Isabel Kirchner kicked in nine, but a late rally in the fourth set looking to extend the match to a fifth, came up just short.
Victoria Hutchinson registered 21 digs and had five of the team’s 15 aces in the four-set affair.
Down two sets to none, Rowan trailed 16-15 in the third before a momentum-changing 7-1 run to stay ahead for good. The fourth set was a battle of scoring swings as the Profs led 13-7 thanks to seven-straight points. The lead grew to 21-14 before the Pride countered with a run of its own, turning the score into a 21-21 tie. Kirchner’s kill put the home team ahead by one, but Widener scored four of the next five points to close it out.
Against Catholic (10-25, 25-19, 27-25, 25-16), the Profs came out on fire in the first set, jumping out to an 8-1 edge and did not look back. In the third set, Rowan battled back from a 22-18 deficit to knot things up at 22-22. The teams traded points until the Cardinals finally got it to 27-25.
Kaul again put down a match-best 19 kills and added 13 digs. Hutchinson 24 digs were a career-best for the sophomore libero. Rookie Ciara Bradley contributed 11 kills.
The middle match saw Catholic defeat Widener, 3-0.
Rowan will host Mary Washington here on Tuesday beginning at 7 p.m.
