‘Last Chance U’ coach Davern Williams lands at Kennesaw State

KENNESAW, Ga. (BVM) — The Netflix series “Last Chance U” has highlighted plenty of special players and unique coaches like Davern Williams, who was hired as the defensive ends coach at Kennesaw State on July 6.

“When Kennesaw State first started playing ball and had success, people feared them because of their style of football. They played with toughness on the field and were fun to watch,” Williams said in a . “There has been a lot of success here and who wouldn’t want to be a part of that? And now that the program is moving up to a higher division, I want to be a part of a movement. I want to be a part of the continuing success that Kennesaw State has laid the foundation for.”

Williams had a short stint in the NFL before beginning his coaching career and he eventually landed at East Mississippi Community College (EMCC) and took part in the first two seasons of “Last Chance U.”

“Our whole focus was on trying to win the game. We were trying to make sure that we were focused on whoever we were playing at that time and focus on getting our kids prepared,” Williams said in the release. “We really didn’t put any emphasis on that show until after it came out. … I thought it was a great experience once the episodes came out and the producers did a nice job of recording raw footage of what the junior college football world is like. I felt like it was very genuine.”

The show became a huge hit across the country, but Williams and the Lions were able to stay on task and recorded a 42-3 overall record, won two NJCAA national titles and 23 of Williams’ defensive linemen moved on to four-year programs. He was also able to instill life lessons into his players.

“I teach my players that it is all about developing a good work ethic. Let’s just be honest, everybody’s not going to have the size or have the speed, but those are things that people cannot control,” Williams said in the release. “However, the one thing that everyone can control is their work ethic. There’s a lot of hard working, less-talented guys in the NFL … I feel like the work ethic that has already been instilled in this place and in this program would be the same message that I really would repeat to my guys.”

Following his time on “Last Chance U,” Williams is set to help the Owls’ defensive ends during his first season with the team. Now in Georgia, he will look to continue to help young athletes who aspire to be great.

“Coach Williams has coached the defensive line position for many years,” Kennesaw State head football coach said in a . “He has developed talent all throughout his career and I am excited to watch him get to work with our guys.”
