Koi Perich: From a town of 2,222 to Golden Gopher football

ESKO, Minn. (BVM) 鈥 Koi Perich was born and raised in the small town of Esko, Minnesota. The city鈥檚 population: 2,222. Despite that, colleges were still able to find the talents of the 6-foot-1, 195-pound safety at Esko High School.

The No. 144 player in the country for the 2024 recruiting class according to has received 10 Division I offers up to this point in time, but something always stood about the offer from the in-state Golden Gophers.

He announced his commitment to the program on Apr. 19.

鈥淭he opportunity to play for them is pretty cool,鈥 Perich said.聽

It was not just the fact that it was close to home, but the school made sense for his future aspirations as well.聽

Minnesota produced Antoine Winfield Jr. a few years ago and they have another talented safety in Tyler Nubin who is expected to go in the first couple of rounds of the 2024 NFL Draft. With both of those players playing the same position as Perich, he saw that there was a path to play the game for a long time if he went to school in Minneapolis.

鈥淚t鈥檚 the best way to get drafted,鈥 Perich said. 鈥淚 think I鈥檓 a perfect fit for what they鈥檙e looking for.鈥

That dream of playing professionally started a long time ago for Perich. He got into football early on and fell in love with it pretty quickly. The main reason for that? The physicality of the sport.

鈥淚 always knew I wanted to play,鈥 Perich said. 鈥淚 loved hitting people.鈥

That passion created the relentless work ethic that now exists in the future Big Ten football player.

鈥淚 just try to be the best I can be,鈥 Perich said. 鈥淚 just try not to be lazy. I just try to do one thing every single day at practice. If you take a day off, it’s just a day you鈥檙e losing.鈥

The player that Perich tries to emulate the most on the field is 16-year NFL veteran Brian Dawkins, who retired back in 2011.

鈥淗e sure jumps out,鈥 Perich said. 鈥淗e was an animal.鈥

The Esko star has quite the individual resume already, but the one thing he feels like he is missing is a state title. Perich is set up for long-term success, but he cares more about what he can do for his high school team in his final season.

鈥淭he only thing that matters is winning the game,鈥 Perich said. 鈥淎ll you can do is to just try and do your best to help the squad.鈥

鈥淲e just want to have success every step of the way.”
