Make way for Atascocita track and field runner Wazell Wright
HUMBLE, Texas — Focused, meticulous, and targeted are a few of the descriptors that come to mind when thinking on soon to be senior Wazell Wright of the Atascocita Eagles out of Humble, Texas. The 5ft9 student-athlete understands that discipline, strong work ethic and devotion is what will be required to attain his ultimate goals in the track and field arena.
With top times in the 200 and 100 races, he currently has a personal best of 21.43 in the 200 and 10.54 in the 100 as of 2023 outdoor season. Wazell raced among the best of the best in the county, attending the Nike invitational in Oregon finishing 7th overall which was an experience that he could appreciate, racing in front of his largest crowd ever.
When asked why he loves the sport of track and field, the track star answered like someone who understands himself and that is rare at his tender age.
The student-athlete retorted, 鈥淭he community that comes along with the sport of track is what I admire most about it. One of the most fulfilling experiences of my life has been being a part of the track community, considering I’ve developed friendships and relationships that will continue long after high school. These friendships inspire and motivate me even when I’m not competing. I will forever treasure the sense of camaraderie that track & field has given me.鈥
It is awesome that Wazell recognized the community that lies in track, although many think it to be an individualized sport, there are events where one is not solo such as the relays that we all love. There is also the added element of point scoring that aids in wins at the overall team level, and Wazell understands how impactful and helpful being a part of a group dynamic is. Involvement in a team fosters positive peer pressure to compete and do well competitively, among other beneficial social skills.
Outside of his athletic attributes, Wazell is an amazing guy, with lots of character and good old southern manners to go with his loveable personality. It鈥檚 normal to catch him posting philosophical sayings about hard work, determination, and ways to master self on his IG social media account.
When asked what his favorite quote was the 17-year-old, replied with the following words that were written by Olympic Swimmer Michael Phelps in his book published in 2008 saying, 鈥淵ou dream. You plan. You reach. There will be obstacles. There will be doubters. There will be mistakes. But with hard work, with belief, with confidence and trust in yourself and those around you, there are no limits.鈥
His selection speaks to the nature that he possesses as one who is willing to overcome obstacles and understands there will be hurdles to jump and tests, in addition to trials.
In the world of sports, a lot of times coaches and fans alike want to know what sets an athlete apart from his peers.
Wazell spoke to that saying, 鈥淭he attention to detail I put into every element of my training is what makes me stand out from other runners. Including my training methods, diet, rest, and a focus on the value of recovery. I put forth a lot of work, pay attention to detail, and have an unwavering passion for what I do.鈥
That attention to detail is key and is something that will help the highly touted recruit be successful at the collegiate level.
The college hopeful also noted that his favorite professional runner of all time is 鈥淣oah Lyles due to his several remarkable performances and his fun personality, which increases popularity within the sport of track and field鈥.
Spoken like someone who understands the magnitude of good people, with good energy reflecting positively on the sport so many love and follow!
I certainly wish this young man the best and will continue following his performances. Whatever program he decides to commit to will be getting a great addition on talent alone; but a coach鈥檚 dream as far as work ethic and attitude and being dedicated to getting better.
I undoubtedly can say Mr. Wright is tier 1 as an overall human being and the future is bright for him if he continues with the same mindset and continues to produce competitive times as he has done thus far. Keep a watch out for this one! He shines just like the scorching sun in his home state of Texas. Yet he does it in a way that demonstrates modesty, humility and an understanding that surpasses even most adults.
