Top 10 all-time leading passers in Utah HS football
1. Austin Kafentzis, Jordan (2011-14)
There have been a lot of good players to come through Utah, but Kafentzis is undoubtedly one of the best no matter the position. The 6-foot-1 quarterback made his name known right off the bat, accounting for 45 total touchdowns as a freshman at Jordan High School, being named MaxPreps National Freshman of the Year. He would earn the same honor as a sophomore, and was also named Utah’s Gatorade Player of the Year, an award he would win again in 2014.
During his sophomore year, Kafentzis helped the Beetdiggers to a state title. However, it’s the individual statistics from his prep career that standout. Kafentzis is Utah’s all-time leader in passing yards (12,929) and rushing yards (6,749), and is the only player in the country to hold state records in both categories. His 811 completions are the third-most in state history, while his 114 passing touchdowns are the fifth-most, and his 100 career rushing touchdowns lead the state, as do his 37 career 100-yard rushing efforts.
Coming out of high school as a three-star recruit, Kafentzis originally committed to Wisconsin. He never played a game for the Badgers before transferring to Nevada, and eventually Arizona Western College. Kafentzis found his main college home, however, with BYU where he saw the field for three seasons in multiple roles. His college career may not have turned out exactly as expected, but Kafentzis’ high school career will forever keep him a legend in Utah.
