In high school, Pickryl was both his intellect and his speed on the football field. He ultimately chose Texas because it was important that he attended a school with both a good football and engineering program.

As a freshman at , Pickryl posted record stats and a perfect 4.0 GPA. He registered 30 tackles, eight tackles for loss (T-No. 8 on the UT all-time freshman list), 4.5 sacks (T-No. 4 on the UT all-time freshman list) and 11 QB hurries.
