Viral ambidextrous QB Mikey Gow transfers to HS in Oklahoma
MUSTANG, Okla. (BVM) 鈥� Lee Blankenship is heading into Year 5 of being 惭耻蝉迟补苍驳鈥檚 head football coach, and he鈥檚 ready to lead the Broncos back to the playoffs. This season, his program may be able to do that with a new quarterback on his roster: viral sensation Mikey Gow.

Gow announced on that he would be transferring to Allen High School in Texas and competing for one of the nation’s most prominent high school football programs. However, just six months later, it was announced that Gow would be heading north and transferring to Mustang High School, and Blankenship took to social media to research the QB.聽
鈥淪ocial media is not going to win Mikey any starting jobs, but you know you can get a look at the kid and see the talents that he brings,鈥� Blankenship said. 鈥淭hrowing the ball the way he does, is very impressive 鈥� and the way social media is today is a cool thing for the kid to get that kind of recognition, and it really takes a mature kid to be able to handle that recognition, and that鈥檚 what I think Mikey is.鈥澛�

Gow arrived in Mustang on June 9 in time for the team鈥檚 annual camp, and he was able to catch up on the playbook and took the field for one series at the camp game.
鈥淗e has a very high football IQ,鈥� Blankenship said. 鈥淭hat’s something that struck me early 鈥� He had three practices before we had our game, but he still came in and really played fearlessly. It was a great experience for him.鈥�
Gow鈥檚 arrival has had an impact, bringing plenty of excitement to the Mustang football program, but it will take more than one player鈥檚 potential contributions to help the program build off last year鈥檚 8-3 campaign.
鈥淲e’re not always going to be as athletic as teams that we play, but we know who we are, and it鈥檚 all about trying to be consistent,鈥� Blankenship said. 鈥淲e have a blue-collar program, and we thrive on hard work. That’s something that we preach every day, and Mikey has done a great job of coming in and being a part of that.鈥�
Heading into his junior year and given his social media presence, there may be some high expectations for Gow to lead Mustang to a state title, but Blankenship will make sure his team takes it one step at a time.
鈥淲e want to control what we can control and be the very best version of us,鈥� Blankenship said. 鈥淚f we do that, then good things will happen for us.鈥�
It鈥檚 been an extraordinary athletic journey for Gow up to this point, and there will be plenty of obstacles to overcome in a Bronco uniform, but heading into the 2023-24 high school football season and under Blankenship’s leadership, the sky remains the limit for him.
