Westfield Rocks softball makes history with sectional championship

WESTFIELD, Ind. — In an inspiring season that defied all odds, the Westfield High School Rocks softball team etched their names in the annals of school history, clinching their first-ever sectional title. Overcoming a challenging regular season with a 17-14 record, these resilient Rocks showcased unwavering determination, teamwork, and a never-give-up attitude. Led by Head Coach Brian Revercomb and guided by the leadership of two seniors, the team soared to unprecedented heights, but no one outside of the team saw this coming.

As the spring season dawned upon Westfield High School, anticipation filled the air as the softball team set their sights on the upcoming campaign. However, the team faced an uphill battle, having the ninth toughest schedule in the entire state. Pundits may have doubted this squad, but Coach Revecomb, in his eighth year as the team鈥檚 leader, made sure to keep the team focused.

鈥淚 was upfront with them and said the schedule is challenging, but that will make us play with consistency,鈥 Revercomb said. 鈥淚 know that people love rankings and polls, but I told the team that no one really knows who we are unless they play us.鈥

The regular season presented its fair share of obstacles, challenging the team’s resolve and pushing them to their limits. Battling through a three and four game losing streak, injuries to key players, and tough opponents like Center Grove and Avon, these Rocks found themselves with a 17-14 record, far from perfect. However, this group of dedicated athletes refused to let setbacks define them. Each loss served as a stepping stone towards growth, motivating them to work harder and improve their skills.

鈥淪oftball is a game where the downs outnumber the ups,鈥 said senior infielder Maggie Roh. 鈥淏ut when you focus on the wins and don鈥檛 put too much pressure on yourself, good things happen.鈥

Roh and fellow senior Allie Dolenc were at the heart of the team’s success, guiding the team both on and off the field. Dolenc, a seasoned infielder, said she tried to keep the team focused and mentally tough.

“All year, we focused on the mental game aspect,鈥 Dolenc said. 鈥淲henever someone would get down on themselves for striking out or making an error, I always told them that it鈥檚 ok. I wanted everyone to just do their best. I wanted them to relax. I wanted to help take pressure off.”

Under the mentorship of Coach Revercomb, the team flourished and notched achievements that outpaced preseason expectations. One such example is their 1-0 victory over Hamilton Southeastern, a team that has beaten Westfield every game for more than two decades.

鈥淭hat HSE game was certainly one of the biggest highlights of the season,鈥 Roh said. 鈥淭hat score and the stats won鈥檛 show it, but we played an amazing game, we made great in-game adjustments, and we were picking each other up all game.鈥

The pinnacle of the season, and perhaps the program鈥檚 history, came in an intense sectional championship game that will forever be etched in the memories of players and fans alike.

The Rocks knew that HSE would be out for revenge when they met in the sectional finals just two weeks after their emotional regular season matchup. Roh, who will be playing softball and studying business at the University of Toledo, wanted to be a calming presence going into the game.

鈥淲e knew that we had to bring our A-game,鈥 Roh said. 鈥淲e made ourselves relax and have fun. We knew we would play our game, and we played with confidence.鈥

Against the odds, the Rocks showcased their prowess and resilience by defeating the Royals for the second time, again by the score of 1-0. Dolenc, who will play and study business at Lincoln Land Community College, found it hard to comprehend what she and the team had just done.

鈥淚t was unreal,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 couldn鈥檛 believe we actually did that! We were expected to fail and get out of the tournament early, so it felt amazing to get that victory. I was extremely proud to be a part of this team.鈥

The triumph of the Westfield High School softball team is not just a celebration of one remarkable season but also the culmination of Revercomb鈥檚 eight years at the helm.

鈥淓very kid I鈥檝e coached over these eight years had a part in this accomplishment,鈥 he said. 鈥淭hose kids put on clinics for younger players, they gave batting lessons to young girls. And a lot of the players on this year鈥檚 team were taught by my previous players. The championship belongs to all of us.鈥
