Newport Harbor HS boys volleyball championships and season highlights with coach Andrew Mabry
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — Newport Harbor High School Boys Volleyball team is a winner of SIX CIF-SS champions in the history of the program and since the inception of the school. Coach Mabry said, 鈥淚t is the hardest championship to win in the country. 鈥� NHHS is up against stiff competition including against private schools.
When we spoke on (May 24, 2023) Max Prep ranked NHHS as number one in the nation. Coach Mabry said, 鈥淭hey expect the same ranking.鈥� Coach Mabry said, 鈥淭hey have been number one in polling all season. 鈥�
Their overall record is 36-3. They won three tournaments Best of the West Invitational in San Diego in March 2023, won Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions in April and also won the Sunset Surf League Championship (comprised of CDM, HB, NHHS and Los Alamitos.)
In May 2023 they had another more major win, (to put this in context it鈥檚 their 5th consecutive CIF-SS final.) The Sailors Boys Volleyball team won CIF-SS Div. One championship against CDM. It鈥檚 the team鈥檚 second year in a row they鈥檝e won this title.
Coach Mabry said, 鈥淭o be in five consecutive CIF-SS finals is truly amazing!鈥�
The Co Captains on the team are both 4 year varsity players, Jake Read is an outside hitter position, and he is a senior and committed to Loyola Chicago University and聽 Luca Curci is also an outside hitter and is committed to UCLA. Coach Mabry said,鈥� Two captains and leaders of the team and 4-year varsity players are, 鈥淜ill leaders鈥� on the volleyball team for 鈥渁ttacking points鈥�
Up and coming leaders that will return next season include: Riggs Guy, a junior and is committed to UCSB volleyball.聽 He is a two-year starter, so next year he will be 3 year starter. Another key player is Jack Berry and he is a sophomore middle blocker and he is also a basketball player at NHHS.
Coach Mabry has been coaching volleyball at NHHS since the summer of 2019 and also coaches聽 the girls鈥� volleyball team and teaches history. Prior to coaching at NNHS he spent 8 years at Orange Lutheran and won a CIF champion there as well.
