Christ School鈥檚 Khalil Conley: A top performer on and off the field
ARDEN, N.C. — Number 9 for the Christ School varsity football team, Khalil Conley is a 3-star wide receiver who recently transferred from Asheville High School. This re-class junior has had quite the journey so far. Since 2020, Conley’s rushed for nearly 1,000 yards. During the 2022 season alone, he caught for 731 yards and had 6 touchdowns. It鈥檚 not surprising that Khalil has 12 Division 1 offers, including UNC Chapel Hill, Coastal Carolina University, Virginia Tech, and Duke University.
Khalil shared his perspective about what it鈥檚 like to be a student-athlete and have the opportunity to play at a collegiate level. 鈥淚’m excited about the atmosphere, playing in front of big crowds is all a part of college football. Performing in front of them is something I look forward to.鈥�
When Khalil transferred, he switched positions on the field from quarterback to wide receiver. 鈥淔inding a way to be a leader on a team was an interesting challenge. Everyone knows that the quarterback on the football team is automatically thrown into a leadership role. As a wide receiver, you have a choice to be a leader or a role player. Being a leader of a team without being the quarterback was one of the biggest adjustments.鈥�
While in school full time and juggling a consistent practice schedule and workout routine, Khalil works part-time at the Montford Community Center. Khalil is a good role model, not only to his younger brother and sister, but to many other kids. During our conversation, I noticed his positive attitude and he shared a great piece of advice for other student athletes working toward a successful career. 鈥淒on’t get caught up in results that are not there right away, continue to work and motivate yourself even when you are not getting quick results. Good things come to those who are consistent鈥�.
As we wrapped up, Khalil highlighted how 鈥�…having an upper hand with my grades has been really helpful for recruitment鈥�.
Khalil Conley鈥檚 story is so much more than his sportsmanship and success on the field. Through his leadership skills and drive in the classroom, he鈥檚 not only created some amazing opportunities for his own future, but served as an inspiration for his teammates and those around him in the Asheville community.
