Top storylines from 2023 NCAA softball regionals

Ragin’ Cajuns take down in-state foe LSU twice on Sunday

UCLA losing in two games to bow out of this year’s tournament was maybe the most shocking result of the weekend, but LSU not making it to super regionals isn’t far behind. The Tigers’ tournament began with an easy five-inning victory over Prairie View A&M, but it led to three consecutive matchups with in-state Louisiana.Ìý

Most probably didn’t expect that to be an issue, particularly after LSU took down the Ragin’ Cajuns 4-0 on Saturday. However, on Sunday, the tides turned. That began with a 7-4 victory in favor of Louisiana as the Tigers blew an early 4-1 lead.Ìý

In the second game of the day, the Ragin’ Cajuns carried over their momentum, putting up six runs off of freshman pitcher Sydney Berzon in the first inning thanks to a grand slam from Jourdyn Campbell. The Tigers had a rally in store, however, putting up six runs in the third inning sandwiched between a couple of one-run innings in the second and the fourth. A Louisiana run in the fifth cut the deficit to 8-7, but LSU held the lead into the seventh needing just three more outs for the win.

It didn’t happen, as back-to-back singles to open the inning began another Louisiana rally. After Lauren Allred scored on a passed ball to tie the game, it was Campbell who came through again, driving in the winning run with a base hit.Ìý

The stunning win helped the Ragin’ Cajuns to their first super regional appearance since 2016 where they will take on No. 7 Washington, but perhaps the bigger storyline was LSU’s inability to finish the job on Sunday.
