Meet Farmington athletes, brothers Trel, Zander and Sataurus Griego
FARMINGTON, N.M. — Our local athletic programs are full of impressive student-athletes and so is the Griego household. With three students attending Farmington High School and playing multiple sports this trio of brothers are making an impact.

Oldest of the three and in his junior year, Trel Griego, has made First Team All-Academic with a 4.138 GPA as well as First Team All-District Quarterback for his recent football season. Competing in 6A football the team made it to the second round of the state tournament. His season included 3,000 pass yards and 31 touchdowns. Switching to basketball next, Trel has once again been a key player, being awarded MVP of the Gallup Invitational Tournament recently. With his successful athletic career so far, Trel says he’s learned to, “Always work hard and put your very best out for display at all times.” Definitely emerging as a leader himself, Trel also says, “I look up to Lebron James because of the dominance he has shown but also his leadership and passion that he has daily.”

Twin brothers Zander and Sataurus are in the ninth grade at FHS, both playing multiple sports, putting up great numbers, and keeping a positive mindset. Zander Griego maintains a 3.8 GPA, played wide receiver on the FHS JV football team, and is a leading rebounder for C-Team basketball with a season-high game of 17 points and 10 rebounds. Achieving success through his work ethic, Zander says, “My goal for next season is to put in the work to get faster, stronger, and better so I can make the varsity team and be a factor on the football field and basketball court. It’s important to have a good mindset because there is always someone bigger, faster, and stronger than you.” A player he looks up to is the 2020 Rookie of the Year Ja Morant. “He is good at basketball and seems to relate to kids well,” says Zander of Morant as he respects him for both his skill and philanthropic work.

Sataurus Griego played his football season as the FHS JV quarterback and starting long snapper for the varsity team. High GPAs are a standard among the brothers, Sataurus also with a 3.7 GPA. He made the JV basketball team and had a best game of 38 points and 5 rebounds this season. Finding inspiration in LaMelo Ball because the NBA player is the youngest of three boys and all are professional athletes, Sataurus says about his seasons so far, “I learned to always work hard and have a good attitude no matter what you are going through.”
Whatever the sport may be, playing on many fields and courts for fun and in competition is something the Griego brothers will always have together. They all say their first memories of playing sports with each other is basketball. Family, leadership, hard work and a very respectable commitment to their academic as well as sports careers are all important to the boys. Congratulations to the Griego family on their long list of successes with many more to come at this rate, keep working!
