Meet Danville wrestler, team captain Charlee Carmicle

DANVILLE, Ky. — Charlee Carmicle, a senior at Danville High School, is the team captain of the girls wrestling team. She has been wrestling for over six years, and has placed in state four times. When asked why she wrestled, Charlee said, 鈥淚 fell in love with the sport, and it鈥檚 a great way to let out my emotions. When I鈥檓 on the mat, I forget about everything else, and just focus on the person across from me that I have to beat.鈥

Wrestling has always been a male-dominated sport, but that doesn鈥檛 stop Charlee from being a pioneer for young girls all over the county. According to Charlee, when she began wrestling, there were no girls, and she had to compete with an all-male team for five years. Now, she has her own all-girls wrestling team, and has been able to compete with them all year.

One person who has helped Charlee through her wrestling journey is her high school teacher Joey Sallee. According to Charlee, 鈥淪allee has always pushed me to do better and better, and be the athlete that I am today.鈥

On top of being captain of her wrestling team, Charlee also coaches youth wrestling in Danville. When asked about her coaching experience, Charlee said, 鈥淚 just wanted to start giving back what was given to me, and to help younger girls.鈥 Charlee鈥檚 best advice is, 鈥淒on鈥檛 give up. Even though it鈥檚 hard, never stop doing what you love because other people tell you you should.鈥
