Danville Christian Academy boys volleyball continues to grow
DANVILLE, Ky. — While Danville Christian Academy (DCA) may be small in number, the school has never been shy about trying new endeavors. In 2019, DCA was one of the first three schools in the region to form a men鈥檚 volleyball team. They have grown from having a couple of players to now having a full team of over 15 students. The team ranges from middle schoolers to seniors鈥 all of whom rely on each other on the court.
Senior/player Grayson Domidion describes volleyball as a 鈥渢rue team sport鈥搕here鈥檚 never a moment when you鈥檙e just relying on yourself.鈥
Fellow senior/player Noah Meyer adds, 鈥淓veryone has to be moving in the correct spots at the right time, and there is a real system to this game.鈥
According to the players, the strategy and fast pace are a big draw to the sport. Although men鈥檚 volleyball is growing, it is not currently sanctioned by the KHSAA. Many area schools are reluctant to take on the sport.
Coach Jeannie Gayle Hurst connects this to the stereotype that 鈥減eople just don鈥檛 think it’s fun.鈥
Domidion also adds that 鈥渁 lot of people see the sport as just a girls sport, when that’s really just untrue.鈥
However, DCA has seen firsthand the success and excitement men鈥檚 volleyball is adding to the student body.
鈥淓veryone is in it to have fun, and we also want to win, so it鈥檚 about being a team,鈥 says Meyer.
Perhaps if more schools followed in DCA鈥檚 footsteps of forming a team, men鈥檚 volleyball would receive the recognition the players have earned.
