Lake City boys basketball team wins IDHSAA 5A state championship
COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — The Lake City High School boys basketball team went into the 2021-22 season ranked number one in Idaho. They played well all year and went into the state tournament as the favorites to win the championship. As things go sometimes in sports, they got beat in the first game and the hopes and dreams came to an end. As the players and coaches prepared for this year, the goal was clear. Anything short of a state championship would be a disappointment. As they learned the year before, there are no guarantees.
Even though they had a great group of athletes coming back, they still faced several obstacles. There was the fact that despite having some pretty good teams through the years, Lake City had never won a state title in boys’ basketball. Also, the team that won the state title the previous year had almost everyone back and they were looking forward to repeating it. In addition to that, winning a state title is tough.
The state tournament started off like the previous year. The top seed Lake City against the 8 seed. The similarities stopped there. The previous year Lake City was upset. This year they won in a very lopsided victory. Lake City 62, Highland 25.
That set the stage for a round two match-up against Madison. Lake City had never beaten Madison. In fact, a loss to Madison was how the previous season ended for Lake City. After a tough battle, Lake City came out on top 58-49.
Now the state title game against Meridian. Just two years prior, Meridian beat Lake city in the State title game. A rematch was a perfect way to end the tournament. Lake City prevailed in front of 10,500+ fans to win its first boys basketball state title in the history of the school.
Lake City finished the season 26-0 and victories included wins over a few Washington powerhouse schools including the 2022-23 state champion, Curtis High School.
As I watched the championship game, I couldn鈥檛 help but think that I was watching lifelong memories being created. I was witnessing an event that would be repeated in embellished 海角社区 to children and grandchildren over the next several decades.
