What has been your favorite experience at Shelton?

Callie Wakefield: Getting to go with my Cross Team to Waco to run in the TAPPS state meet. It was fun being able to compete against other competitive runners in the 4A division. I also loved being able to be with my teammates and help the girls team to place third in 2019 and fourth in 2021.

Who has been your favorite teacher?

Wakefield: Dr. Franklin (Physics & Physics II). She has enthusiasm when she teaches, which makes the environment easier to learn. She makes her classes fun by having a good sense of humor. She has realistic expectations for us and knows what we’re capable of. She’s also very accommodating with everyone’s different styles of learning.

How has Shelton impacted your life?

Wakefield: It has taught me different tools to help overcome my dyslexia and reading struggles as well as be successful in school. Some examples are learning how to utilize reading and writing software, keeping myself organized and teaching me how to advocate for myself, such as asking for a reader or extra time on tests or quizzes. I no longer feel embarrassed to ask for those things if I think they will help me.

Would you recommend Shelton?

Wakefield: Yes. It’s a good balance of having the small classes and accommodations needed for students with a learning difference to be successful, but it also has all of the great things that come with a large school, such as things like football games, lots of clubs, pep rally and school dances.

What are your college and career aspirations?

Wakefield: I plan to study marine biology in college. I hope to get a Masters degree and maybe even a Ph.D. in Marine Biology. I would love to one day do research on sharks or on coral reef ecosystems.

What is a fun/surprising fact about you?

Wakefield: I’m SCUBA certified and I was able to SCUBA dive in the Georgia Aquarium with two whale sharks for my sixteenth birthday.
