Q&A with Columbine multi-sport athlete Brayden Harvey

Q&A with Columbine multi-sport athlete Brayden Harvey

LITTLETON, Colo. — Meet Brayden Harvey, a senior at Columbine High School. Brayden is a three-sport athlete, a unique and impressive achievement! This year, he is playing baseball, football, and basketball. He has played baseball for all four years at Columbine and plays center field. He has also played basketball for four years and is a guard. He has played football for three years and most recently played in the quarterback position. We are honored to get to know this student-athlete in our community.

Tell me a little about yourself.

Brayden Harvey: Most of my time outside of class is spent playing sports. I compete and train year-round. I also love to listen to music whenever I can. Next year, I hope to play either baseball or basketball in college. Right now, I am planning on pursuing a degree in the medical field and keeping my options open in regard to a specialty. I have three siblings. My oldest sister is 21 and lives in Arizona, and my two younger siblings attend Ken Caryl Middle School.

What are some highlights from your sports seasons this past year?

Harvey: In Columbine鈥檚 latest baseball season, I had a walk-off hit in extra innings against Ralston Valley, a major rival. In basketball, it was my first time playing varsity full-time in any sport. This was a very different and fun atmosphere. In football, the highlight of the season was beating Chatfield High School with a score of 56-0.

What do you like best about your teams?

Harvey: Our baseball team has so much fun. We have all been playing with or against each other since we were little kids and we are all very close. We put in a lot of work, often practicing for three hours at a time. We have built strong bonds and it鈥檚 just fun to be around those guys.

In basketball, we work hard, doing a lot of running and conditioning. I love the energy that Coach Perkins brings to the practices and games. We feed off that energy.

Football is a brotherhood. We do everything together and bring that togetherness to the games. It鈥檚 fun and inspiring to be part of all of the football traditions.

What leadership do you provide for the other players?

Harvey: I try to be the guy that lifts others up.聽Even if someone misses a couple of shots, I encourage them to keep shooting the ball and have confidence because I know what they can do. I respect my teammates and encourage them because I know that鈥檚 what helps me.

What are some of the life lessons you’ve learned from playing sports?

Harvey: Don’t take your little league and growing up playing sports for granted because it will be gone quickly. Cherish friendships. Be social, even with people you play against, and make friends. I have learned about making and keeping commitments to my team. I have had fun and I cherish those moments.

What piece of advice would you give to new members of the teams?

Harvey: Be who you are. Don鈥檛 be afraid to do what you do. The coaches will take care of you if you keep working. Keep your school grades up so you can play.
