In his senior season at Marietta, Gilbert topped 1,800 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns in 16 games, leading to聽 the National Gatorade Player of the Year award in 2019. With offers from around the country, Gilbert committed to play at LSU. Following eight games with the Tigers his freshman year, he transferred to Georgia where he would play sparingly for two seasons. At the end of the 2022 campaign, Gilbert transferred to Nebraska.
