Liberty volleyball team recaps busy season
LIBERTY, Mo. — The Liberty High School volleyball team was able to travel outside of the Kansas City area for several tournaments this past year. This summer, we traveled to the University of Kansas Lawrence campus for team camp, where we were able to stay in dorms overnight. We also traveled to Orlando, Florida, for the KSA Volleyball Tournament, where the team competed. The tournament took place in the mornings for three days, and then in the afternoons, we were able to hit several of the theme parks for some much-needed down-time.
Our time in Orlando was definitely the most memorable trip of the season. The Avatar ride at Animal Kingdom was one of the team鈥檚 favorite memories. It is a 3-D flight simulation through the Avatar lands, which is said in the movie, and during the ride to be a great challenge. During the ride experience, the word聽厂颈惫补办辞听is used, which is the 鈥渞ite of passage鈥 term meaning to 鈥渞ise to the challenge鈥.聽Sivako聽made such an impact on the girls, it soon became the team鈥檚 motto for the remainder of the year. It meant so much to the team that we even made temporary tattoos for all of the girls.
We held to our motto through the season, and even though we lost in the district finals, the win for the girls from the entire season were the relationships that were built. The team grew to really love and care for one another, playing hard in every game for each other.聽
In my 19 years of coaching high school volleyball, we have had numerous opportunities to travel out of state. The relationships that are built through this volleyball program transcend past the walls of the high school. Taking the team out on the road provides the girls with many great life experiences while creating life-long bonds. While being away from home and family can be challenging, the bonds formed off the court are priceless.
