Top 10 NFL players who got their start in the CFL
1. Warren Moon
After starring at Washington where he was the MVP of the 1977 Rose Bowl game, Moon went undrafted. Prior to the 1978 NFL Draft, Moon signed with the CFL’s Edmonton Eskimos where he would spend the first six years of his pro football career. After starting out as a backup, Moon eventually became the Eskimos’ starter, and was part of one of the CFL’s greatest dynasties as Edmonton won five consecutive Grey Cups from 1978-1982. In 1983, Moon threw for a league-best 5,648 yards and 31 touchdowns as he won the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player Award. Across his six-year career in Edmonton, Moon threw for over 21,000 yards and 141 touchdowns.
His transition to the NFL was rocky at first, evidenced by a 1986 season in which he threw a league and career-high 26 interceptions. However, Moon quickly turned things around, however, making the Pro Bowl in his final six years with the Houston Oilers, while twice leading the league in passing in 1990 and 1991 with 4,689 and 4,690 yards, respectively. Moon would make two more Pro Bowls with the Vikings and one with the Seahawks before ending his career with the Chiefs. His NFL career concluded with 49,325 career passing yards and 291 passing touchdowns. Moon was also solid with his legs throughout his career as he ran for an additional 1,736 yards and 22 touchdowns.
