West Shore cheer team headed for Nationals at Walt Disney World
MELBOURNE, Fla. — Brevard County is one of the only counties in Florida that did not offer competitive cheerleading as a sport. We worked hard last year to petition to the school board to bring competitive cheerleading to the county. For the first time in 25 years, competitive cheerleading was made a sport and teams were allowed to compete in competitions in Brevard County and all over the state.
My team at West Shore consists of 15 athletes (13 females and 2 males) that work tremendously hard to support and represent their school.
We competed at the UCA (Universal Cheerleading Association) Central Florida Regional Competition in Tampa and earned 4th place for one of our routines. This competition was crucial for our season because this competition was the only opportunity for a team to earn a bid (invitation) to compete at the National high school cheerleading championships held at Walt Disney World in February.
West Shore earned two bids to nationals (one for each routine) and will be competing at the National high school cheerleading championships February 10-12 at Walt Disney World! This is a huge accomplishment because only four teams in our division received a bid and we were one of them!
We are very excited for this, especially with competitive cheerleading being new to the county and our school. We never expected to be this successful in our first season!
We are working hard to prepare our routines for Nationals, as well as get ready for our Regional and State competition through the FHSAA state series.
I would like to thank my hard-working athletes, dedicated parents, my fellow coaches, supportive school administrators, and the school board for allowing us to participate in such a great experience for these athletes!
We are hoping to represent Brevard County well at Nationals!!
