Meet Southlake Carroll XC runner Jude Alvarez

SOUTHLAKE, Texas — Southlake Carroll’s standout cross country runner, Jude Alvarez, might still be playing soccer if his beloved father hadn’t gotten involved. Sergio Alvarez, who passed away suddenly this winter, recognized his son’s talent in running and brought him to cross country practices in middle school. Jude took to the new sport immediately and has never looked back. “My Dad always emphasized the importance of not wasting a God-given gift…plus Coach Leonard wouldn’t quit nagging me to join,” Jude shares.

GETTING STARTED

Originally, I was a soccer player, but I started running with the XC team when I was in middle school. My focus turned full-time to cross country. I love competing with my opponents and getting pushed by my teammates daily to maximize my potential as a runner.

ACHIEVEMENTS

A defining moment for me聽personally was placing 49th in the Nation as a Junior this season as well as achieving a personal record (PR) of 14:57 for a 5k. 聽I was also incredibly proud when our Southlake Carroll men’s cross country team earned the state championship again this fall. This is the聽team’s fourth consecutive state title!

INSPIRATION

My dad always inspired me. He was聽constantly keeping me accountable to make sure I succeeded. He would be at every聽sporting event cheering me on (and every other Carroll runner, too). He was聽and will always be my hero. My guardian Angel.

RITUALS

Before every meet, I prepare mentally by visualizing how I want the race to unfold, and I reflect on my past training that has gotten me to the place I am now.

FAMILY

My parents make it all happen…they encourage, direct, and guide me to be the best athlete as well as student. My dad was always positive and encouraged me to put forth maximum effort on a daily basis. I hope to always make my dad proud and carry on his legacy. I am also grateful to my mom and my three younger siblings for cheering me on.

THE FUTURE

I can’t wait for one last cross country season with Southlake, Coach Leonard, and my聽teammates. After that, my goal is to pursue my聽academic and athletic career at UCLA. My ambition is to be an architect.

This article is dedicated in loving memory of Sergio Alvarez, a proud father, husband, friend, and community member.聽
