Meet Mamaroneck HS winter track team members
MAMARONECK, N.Y. — We caught up with three Mamaroneck High School seniors who are leaders in Winter Track to get some insight into how they train and condition for success during the indoor season.
SAM YOUNG:
Our biggest goal as a team this year is to win the league championship. We won it in the spring and are hungry to repeat this winter. Before every race I tuck the pendant that my aunt gifted to me in memory of my grandfather into my jersey. The biggest challenge for me this off-season was getting the flu between cross country and indoor track. It was hard to get going early in the season due to the lingering sickness, but I鈥檝e since gotten well underway. Training for winter track is definitely more focused on speed because we race shorter distances. It鈥檚 also freezing.
MATT DOHERTY:
Our goal this year as a team is to try and get success in all events. This is the first time in a while where we have talent both on the track and in the field events as well, so we want to use this opportunity to win some big meets. I don鈥檛 really have too many superstitions, but I鈥檝e started to tuck my jersey in before races. The biggest challenge I faced this off season was my mentality. Track and field sometimes is a very mentally taxing sport, and figuring that out could is a hard, but necessary experience.
Training for winter season is mostly different than fall and spring due to the conditions we鈥檙e running in. In my opinion dealing with the cold makes winter the most difficult season.
NICO OBREGON:
Our goal for the team as of now is to fill the holes left by the class of 22. Last year, we had an amazing season across all events, including multiple state championship appearances. We lost a lot of seniors, however we have plenty of hungry underclassmen eager to compete who can hopefully elevate us into winning another league chip. Right before every race, I jump as high as I can and bring my knees to my chest. It helps ease the pre-race nerves.
I have been nursing a lingering hamstring strain since the middle of my Football season, and it鈥檚 been hard sitting on the sidelines while I see my teammates work. However, I look forward to being 100 %, and will do everything in my power to get there as soon as possible. The training is very similar from season to season, however the winter grind is much more difficult due to the frigid temperatures.
