Catching up on Illinois Wesleyan athletics
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — Illinois Wesleyan men鈥檚 basketball coach Ron Rose notched his 300th career win at the helm of the Titans鈥� program with a 67-63 victory over the University of Chicago on Dec. 20.
A former Titan himself, Rose hiked his 16-year record of 300-140 and led IWU to College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin championships in 2013, 2014, 2021 and 2022 and a share in 2018. Rose took the Titans the Elite Eight in 2022.
Normal Community boys basketball coach Dave Witzig became the winningest coach in the 43-year history of the State Farm Holiday Classic on Dec. 28.
The Ironmen defeated North Chicago, 69-36, in the consolation bracket to give Witzig his 59th victory in the tournament.
Central Catholic junior guard Cole Certa had a 47-point performance quarterfinal win over Kankakee Bishop MacNamara. Certa made eight 3-pointers among his 14 field goals and was 11 of 12 from the free throw line for the third-highest individual scoring output in Classic history.
Darrin York, who led the University High School boys golf team to a state championship in 2016, has taken the reigns of the men鈥檚 program at Heartland Community College.
The Pioneers also finished second in 2012 and third in 2017 under York.
York, is a 1996 graduate of U High and 2000 graduate of Illinois Wesleyan, was an assistant at Heartland in 2002.
Three Normal Community football players have signed national letters of intent to continue their careers at the college level. Defensive back Chris Taylor is headed to Illinois State, kicker Ryan Millmore to Iowa State and wide receiver Elliott Oliver to Wisconsin-Platteville.
Two Normal West girls soccer players signed with St. Ambrose. Seniors Paige Sprout and Mia Heffner signed national letters of intent to play for the Bees.
Two University High softball players signed national letters of intent. Maddie Adams will attend Illinois Wesleyan, while Alyssa Tudor is headed to Illinois Central in the fall.
