Notre Dame lands top ranked transfer QB Sam Hartman
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (BVM) 鈥 Former Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman has been heavily linked to Notre Dame ever since putting his name into the transfer portal at the end of December. On Thursday, Hartman made it official by announcing that he was going to spend his last year of eligibility with the Irish.

The move to South Bend comes with heavy expectations as Hartman has been one of the top quarterbacks in college football over the past few seasons. With the Irish鈥檚 need at the position following the transfer of backup quarterback Drew Pyne to Arizona State last month, Hartman spots in as the likely starter for the 2023 season, even with 2022 starter Tyler Buchner back in the fold.
Buchner, who passed for three touchdowns in Notre Dame’s Gator Bowl victory over South Carolina, missed the majority of the 2022 season following an injury late in Week 2 against Marshall. Hartman, who missed the first week of the season himself after Wake Forest announced that he had Paget-Schroetter syndrome, has the benefit of recent production when it comes to earning the upcoming Notre Dame job. The 6-foot-1 quarterback led the Demon Deacons to an 8-5 record behind his 3,701 passing yards and 38 touchdowns.

鈥淲hatever decisions Sam makes, we support him,鈥 Wake Forest head coach Dave Clawson . 鈥淲hen the bowl game is over, if there’s some incredible offer for him to go to another school and get life-changing money, how can we fault him for that?鈥
With 12,967 passing yards and 110 touchdowns in his five years at Wake Forest, Hartman leaves the ACC program as one of the most prolific passers in school history. His final stats, and play, over the last two seasons made the 6-foot-1 graduate transfer one of the most proven names to hit the portal this year.聽
The Irish will have high hopes, and likely a top rank, going into next season after enjoying a 9-4 campaign in 2022. Notre Dame opens the 2023 schedule in Ireland against Navy, and once again squares off against Ohio State on Sept. 23. Hartman will also get to match up against his now former team when Notre Dame hosts Wake Forest on Oct. 28.
