Urbana hockey team plays alumni in friendly game
IJAMSVILLE, Md. — On December 27th, the 2022-23 Urbana High School Ice Hockey team played the Alumni in a friendly but competitive hockey game at Skate Frederick with about 30 current and former players. 鈥淚 enjoyed seeing teammates and friends from my grade and the ones above me, catching up on college and hockey,鈥� said John Rempe (class of 2021).
鈥淭hrough the years, the names on the back of the Urbana hockey jersey change, however their love for the game and this team never fades away鈥擮nce a Hawk, Always a Hawk,鈥� said Head Coach Toby Heusser. 鈥淚t鈥檚 enjoyable to be able to play against the current team and catch up with the coaches,鈥� said Andrew Landry, UHS 2020 graduate.
This year alumni living as far as Florida came back to play in this game, including Chris Barton (class of 2017). 鈥淚 make every effort to play in the alumni game to see how the program we all have built has grown over the years, as well as catch up with my lifelong friends and mentors.鈥�
Coach Toby added, 鈥滻 always try to find time to have the alumni share their 海角社区 to the current team about how much the team meant to them, because when you are living in the moment sometimes you don鈥檛 realize it.鈥� Assistant Coach Sean Sun (class of 2010) added, 鈥淚 enjoy the chance to play with alumni that I had previously played with during my time in high school or have coached. My favorite part is catching up with the previous players I had coached and seeing how they have progressed in academics, as a player, and life in general.鈥� Although the alumni game was halted temporarily because of COVID it was important to bring back this special night for the Urbana community. Cofrey Heflin exclaimed, 鈥淚 love going to the alumni game every year to see old familiar faces no matter how long it鈥檚 been, it’s like we never left. My favorite part is seeing how the new team is and to be a part of the Urbana Hockey team is a forever family.鈥�
The Urbana Hawks Ice Hockey team are currently 8-0 with two games remaining (Carroll County 1/27 and Oakdale 2/3). The MVHL Playoffs start the week of February 5th at Skate Frederick. Come out to the rink and cheer these Urbana Ice Hawks on!
