Thornton, the No. 1 overall pick in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, joined the Sharks after being acquired from the Boston Bruins. His impact was felt immediately as he went on to win the Hart Memorial Trophy, which recognizes the most valuable player in the NHL, in 2006. He won the Art Ross Trophy, the award given to the player who leads the NHL in points, the same year.聽
Thornton also made four All-Star teams with San Jose and is second in all-time career points (1,055) for the Sharks.聽
