Meet Ladera Ranch area youth surfer Ruby Stringfellow
LADERA RANCH, Calif. — Eleven-year-old Ruby Stringfellow is making big waves in Southern California. Vivacious and totally rad, this determined young lady does not hesitate to chase her dreams. Born in Costa Rica in 2011, Ruby moved to Hawaii in 2012 and entered her first surfing competition at age four. When it ended, she told her parents she wanted to be a world champion.
She鈥檚 well on her way. Ruby is a surfing phenome who has won four of her six recent surfing competitions in WSA (Western Surfing Association) and NSSA (National Scholastic Surfing Association). (She took second in the other two.) Ruby also earned 3rd place in her age group at the 2022 USA Surfing Championships.
Ruby鈥檚 parents are California natives, and Ruby loves living in sunny SoCal. A Ladera Ranch resident since 2021, she surfs every single morning, trains with her surfing coach every week, and works out with Water Groms, a water safety class that helps improve her breathing underwater. 鈥淪ometimes the waves are big and messy,鈥 Ruby explains, 鈥渁nd I get worked and worked by them, so controlling my breathing is really important.鈥
Homeschooled by her devoted mom, Ruby is whip-smart and excels at all her studies, including 7th-grade English, 6th-grade math, and a high school-level personal finance class. She also attends Hebrew school twice weekly, prepping for her big Bat Mitzvah in 2024.
A truly shiny-happy person, Ruby is full of spunk and energy and has a contagious, positive attitude. For such a tiny person, she has a huge, boisterous laugh that fills any room she enters. She loves surfing, and her advice to beginners is, 鈥淎lways make sure you have fun and make it the best learning experience.鈥 In her spare time, Ruby loves hanging out with friends, E-biking around town, making slime, and eating plenty of Froyo.
Ruby is not your typical kid. For the past seven years, she鈥檚 dreamt of someday winning a world title. She鈥檚 doing everything she can to reach her goal, and her efforts, athleticism, and sheer love for the sport haven鈥檛 gone unnoticed.
